The proposed Northern Corridor International Airport will be constructed on reclaimed land in Batu Maung, close to Pulau Rimau, in the same vicinity as the current airport, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (pic).
Only the next 20 to 30 years may be served by the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) expansion project in terms of passenger and cargo capacity.
He concluded the discussion of the Supply Bill and the Motion on the 2019 Development Estimates at the Penang State Assembly meeting here by saying, “The need for a new airport is so critical and aims to safeguard the interests of Penang as the main entry point by air for the northern region of Malaysia.”
The proposal was still in the planning stage, he said, and needed to go through a number of procedures, including feasibility studies, approval from the National Physical Planning Council to reclaim land from the sea, approval from the Environmental Impact Assessment, and a source of funding, even though all the road network and infrastructure needed to build the new airport were in place.
Prior to this, it was stated that LTAPP, which is built to handle 6.5 million passengers annually, handled 7.2 million last year.
The airport urgently needs to be upgraded because the state government anticipates that there will be 7.8 million LTAPP users this year.
Regarding the statement that two hotels would be built atop Bukit Bendera, Chow stated that the proposal was still in the preliminary planning stages.
According to him, requests from both domestic and international tourists prompted the plan to construct the 200-room hotel close to the Convalescent Bungalow in 2016.
In order to give tourists more lodging options, he stated, “The concept and design will be carefully reviewed, and I will also direct the Bukit Bendera Corporation to study and refurbish some state government assets, including repairing the Convalescent Bungalow and restoring the old buildings at Coolie Line.”
According to the Bukit Bendera 2016 Special Area Plan and the 1998 Bukit Bendera Local Plan, Chow stated that the state government and the Bukit Bendera Corporation were dedicated to protecting Bukit Bendera and all of the hilltop development. — Bernama
